The kilt skirt is a classic piece that enjoys a long tradition and that always has a big comeback in the international fashion scene. The origin of this kind of skirt lies in the Scottish Highlands, where Gaelic men and boys wore them somewhere starting in the 16thcentury. The classic design is in a knee-length, pleated, with a red checkered pattern and two little buckles on the top of the side, closing like a little double belt. It used to be worn mainly for formal events, for Highland games and sports but today it is also excepted as an informal clothing.
Nowadays you can find all kind of different interpretations of the kilt skirt, in different lengths, colors and styles. And throughout the years it also got highly recognized and accepted by us ladies. It reminds a bit of a British girl’s school uniform in combination with a Blazer, like you can see me pulling it off in this outfit right here. I love this playful style, for me it has an elegant charm and can be styled very feminine or really girly – whatever you prefer. It just depends on the types of accessories you wear along with the kilt and of course if you wear a fancy blazer jacket or just a cool denim one.
For my kilt skirt look I chose a long black oversized blazer by Saint Laurent. I like to have it hang loose around me and not be all buttoned up. The kilt skirt is a pleated patchwork tartan mini wool skirt from Versace in red and purple. I love the mix of colors and the sexy length. Gives the traditional piece a funky touch. This trendy skirt works super well in this blazer combination but you can also wear it with sneakers for example and a big wool sweater or a vintage leather jacket – it really is all up to you and to your mood.
My boots are the Frenchissima Alta Over knees from Christian Louboutin in patent soft black leather. I love them, they make every leg look long and really hot. For me and my passion for style mixes, they go perfectly with this outfit. A bit too sexy for a school uniform I would say but wonderful for a day in the city or a visit to a gallery for example.
As in all the amazing designs by MCM you can really see and feel the quality of the leather and the design. Every piece they create enjoys the love for every detail and the long history of company know-how. MCM offers classy and modern goods that always meet my taste and fit my different stylings.
The kilt skirt shouldn’t be missing in your fashion collection – it has this beautiful history and is an amazing piece to style in different looks – try it out and feel the breeze from the Scottish Highlands.
