Palm Beach is for sure one of my favorite destinations in the US. I love its atmosphere, the weather and especially its art culture so much and think it is always worth a visit.
On my recent stay in Miami during ART BASEL MIAMI 2021 I had the pleasure to visit some of the amazing mansions located in Palm Beachand am still totally blown away by their interior design and the outstanding collections of art to be found there.
The property by one of the artnews’ top 200 collectors impressed me so much that I want to tell you a little more and show you around. Seeing an original Basquiat was surely one of the highlights that day. We were very lucky to see this exceptional piece as it is usually on loan in museums around the globe. Jean-Michel Basquiat was an American artist who rose to success during the 1980s as part of the Neo-expressionism movement. Basquiat’s art focused on dichotomies such as wealth versus poverty, integration versus segregation, and inner versus outer experience. He appropriated poetry, drawing, and painting, and married text and image, abstraction, figuration, and historical information mixed with contemporary critique. An absolutely outstanding approach to art that has always fascinated me! And what a surprise to actually be able to see this work of his in Palm Beach. The next work we saw during the tour through this unique Palm Beach mansion was Dolly Parton by Andy Warhol. Warhol’s portrait amplifies Dolly’s „Dollyness“ whilst he articulates her character more truly through the use of the cotton candy colored hair and ruby red lips with her gaze being inviting, even seductive. Warhol was prolific with his portraiture and his portrait of Dolly stands out as uniquely successful. A one of a kind piece of art and an honor to have seen it live.Art by Raquib Shaw and Jeff Koons dominated the tremendous living room area. Both are artists I admire a lot. Koons’ work is dealing with popular culture and his sculptures depict everyday objects. Probably, many of you know Jeff Koons Celebration series produced in stainless steel with mirror-finish surfaces with its balloon animals like the famous Balloon Dog. There are five unique versions in blue, magenta, orange, red and yellow. The Orange version was sold in 2013 for a record price for a living sculptor.Takashi Murakami I admire for the joy his art spreads and the hallway of this amazing Palm Beach house to me screamed happiness due to his work A Panda Family Against The Blue Sky from 2014. Murakami’s art is one of optical overload. Over the years, he has developed a distinctive aesthetic universe, filled with candy colors, indiscriminate detail and eccentric recurring characters. Inspired by art forms such as anime and manga, he has put his own psychedelic, national spin on Pop art.
A beautiful painting by the British artist Damien Hirst dominates the kitchen area and feels like it was simply made to be here giving the room a very special atmosphere. It is very hard to describe but the way art is curated in this Palm Beach estate with many different styles being combined yet all coming together as one I have never seen in such a way before and every single piece felt simply right and spot on.Art by Matthew Barney lines the way to the guest bedrooms. Barney’s works explore connections among geography, biology, geology and mythology as well as themes of conflict and failure. A very contemporary artist who by the way is also the former boyfriend of Islandic musician Björk! 😉 The breathtaking architecture of this unique place is underpinned in the way even the guest bedrooms are designed. Attention to detail in its purest form! The outdoor area hosts one of Lawrence Weiner’s pieces. The recently deceased Weiner was an American conceptual artist. He was one of the central figures in the formation of conceptual art in the 1960s. His work often took the form of typographic texts, a form of word art. Furthermore, the house hosts art by Jim Lambie and Subodh Gupta, Richard Prince, Ed Ruscha, Ellsworth Kelly and Thomas Ruff all beautifully curated and installed. The private club as well as beauty salon of this Palm Beach mansion finally convinced me to move in right away! I feel incredibly lucky to have experienced this tour and hope that you enjoyed this glimpse behind the scenes… Can’t wait for my next trip to Palm Beach!
