This year, I had the pleasure to spend my birthday week at the beautiful SAN DOMENICO PALACE, TAORMINA, A FOUR SEASONS HOTEL on the island of Sicily, Italy accompanied by my love. When we arrived I immediately understood why this hotel is said to be the most beautifullyrestored historic hotel in Sicily. Perched on a rocky promontory high above the Ionian Sea, the iconic SAN DOMENICO PALACE, TAORMINA, A FOUR SEASONS HOTEL welcomes you to a 14th-century convent with panoramic views of Mount Etna and the ancient Greek theatre. It’s simply beautiful was my very 1st impression and day by day this impression was confirmed over and over again. The previous monastery has been transformed into an absolute one of a kind sanctuary and the perfect place to relax and spend some quality time! What is especially beautiful at the SAN DOMENICO PALACE, TAORMINA, A FOUR SEASONS HOTEL is that all historic elements have been kept from the intricate mosaic floors to the serene cloister gardens whilst integrating elements of modern comfort to ensure the most luxurious stay possible. This timeless beauty with the charming town of Taormina at its doorstep definitely had me at ‘Hello!’. We spent hours at the clifftop infinity pool which in combination with the spa seeks its equal. This being said, I was able to find perfect relaxation at the SAN DOMENICO PALACE, TAORMINA, A FOUR SEASONS HOTEL and that was what I needed to make my birthday week absolutely perfect.Of course, we also took some time to explore Taormina. Its history dates back to before Ancient Greece established its first colony on Sicily in 734 BCE. Besides the ancient Greek theatre, it has many old churches, lively bars, fine restaurants and antique shops. Taormina is approximately a forty-five-minute drive away from Mount Etna. You can surely imagine how much we enjoyed strolling through its small streets soaking up the traditional Italian vibe, celebrating il dolce far niente. At the SAN DOMENICO PALACE, TAORMINA, A FOUR SEASONS HOTEL we were accommodated at the ETNA SUITE with panoramic views of Mount Etna, the sea and the coastline. The Etna Suite is full of light and the view is absolutely spectacular! I especially loved the spacious living room and its contemporary décor. By the way, did you know that Mount Etna is the tallest volcano in Europe, and one of the most active and frequently erupting in the world? It dominates the skyline of the island of Sicily at about 10, 810 feet tall, with a base circumference of about 150 kilometers. It is believed that Zeus buried a hundred-headed monster named Typhon, underneath Mount Etna, and his restlessness is the cause of any eruptions. My special day, I spent at the TEATRO SUITE with its spectacular terrace overlooking the ancient Greek theatre and the sea. I have to admit that I am a lover of suites with private pools as they are simply perfect for a little refreshment every now and then. The generous indoor and outdoor living areas of this suite are so chic and it was the absolute perfect place to spend my birthday. As I am a foodie for life I felt especially spoiled by the fact that we were able to indulge in award-winning dining experiences right at the hotel. We spent a lovely evening at the ANCIOVI TAORMINA where light dishes highlighting Mediterranean seafood, including a raw bar are combined with Sicilian sushi and the habit of sharing plates. At its poolside bar the expert mixologists serve innovative cocktails inspired by Sicily’s eclectic heritage – creating a destination that’s lively even late in the evening. As I love dining with a view I felt especially spoiled that evening. The PRINCIPE CERAMI is SAN DOMENICO PALACE, TAORMINA, A FOUR SEASONS HOTEL’s signature restaurant, where one can embark on a culinary journey curated by award-winning chef Massimo Mantarro which we did to the absolute fullest. The Etna-born chef presents quintessential Sicilian cuisine showcasing local ingredients and traditions. Every meal is enhanced by superb views of Taormina Bay which was a true delight. I absolutely enjoyed fine dining in fine company! As you can surely tell, I had an absolutely superb birthday week and enjoyed my stay at the SAN DOMENICO PALACE, TAORMINA, A FOUR SEASONS HOTEL to the fullest. A beautiful atmosphere and warm hospitality, combined with culinary treats and finding perfect relaxation – I’ll be back for sure to indulge in this perfect combination!
